Best Accessible Attractions in Sydney, Australia

Sydney certainly has no shortage of things to see and do. It is not only a local tourist destination, but a worldwide landmark destination as well. Being a wheelchair user does not mean that things are beyond your reach. Following are the best accessible attractions that Sydney has to offer.

Manly Beach

So here’s the thing. A trip to Sydney would not be complete without a trip to the harbor. Sure there are cruises designed for tourists, but a short ferry ride will take you to the little suburb of Manly. From there, you have some amazing views of Sydney. Since the ferry runs about every 30 minutes or so, you will have ample opportunity for photo ops before you hop back on for your ride back.

Manly Beach

Royal Botanical Gardens

This attraction is adjacent to the Opera House, and follows the existing waterline. Some areas of the garden can be a bit steep, however there is more than enough to see without trying to navigate steep terrain. Here is where you will find several different species of Australian plants, and many local birds. Watch out for the cockatoo, he is a curious sort. Several accessible restrooms are located on the grounds, and you are sure to need at least an afternoon or so to fully enjoy the attraction.

Queen Victoria Building and Strand Arcade

These are two of Sydney’s icons that are known most for their architecture. They are just beautiful buildings to say the least. Everything from stained glass windows, to the mosaic tiles, to the old clocks that really take you back in time a bit. Both buildings feature shops and restaurants that are accessible, however the Queen Victoria building has much more to offer. The arcade is not a total loss though. Since it is situated in the middle of the city, there are plenty of places to eat and shop. Definitely a must see.

Opera Bar

Okay so here is a great tip. If you really want to enjoy the sunset over Sydney Harbour, then the Opera Bar is the place to be. Just before the sun tucks its head under the ocean for a good nights sleep, the city is abuzz with activity. This is the perfect spot to sit and unwind while the city unravels a bit after a long day. Of mention is the restroom which is not only wheelchair accessible, but rather large as well.

There is so much more that I did not mention. There are spectacular mountains to explore, and aquariums to get you acquainted with what you might find in the ocean. Great shopping and so many great dining options are right under your nose! Sydney is a true jewel that does not disappoint.

As you will see, there are many ways to occupy your time while you are there. Who knows, you might even return home speaking a bit of Australian! I don’t think your friends will mind one bit.
