GUEST POST: Accomable – An Airbnb for Disabled People

–This is a guest post, written by Srin Madipalli.–

Hi! My name is Srin and I’m a co-founder of Accomable, a website to find accessible properties for holidays and swaps.

I’m 29, from London, UK and I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), which means I use a powered wheelchair for mobility and need 24/7 support from personal care assistants.

Just like the awesome Cory Lee, I also love travel and have spent the last decade travelling as much as I can. My adventures have taken me around the world and have ranged from scuba dives in Bali to camping safaris in the South African wilderness to road trips around the US and Europe. My co-founder and lifelong friend, Martyn Sibley also has SMA; and we share a passion for exploring as much of the world as we can.

Our mission at Accomable is to make travel easier for disabled people by creating a platform where users can easily find places with things such as roll-in showers or grab rails.

To that end, we’re looking for more properties, especially in the US!

We’re open to anyone posting a property, just like Airbnb, so if you’d like to list your place or can recommend somewhere you’ve stayed before, get in touch at [email protected].

We’re still at an early / beta stage as we launched the app only two months ago. I even taught myself to code to get it up and running! However, in that time we’ve brought over 100 properties onto the site and we have been featured in publications such as the New York Times and Wired. We’ve also secured seed funding from the Skoll Foundation, a prestigious funding body based in Silicon Valley for startups trying to create social impact.

We’re doing everything we can to build a platform to make accessible travel as easy as possible for our community of fellow disabled travellers, so if you’d like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you! – [email protected].

Much love,

Srin
